Capcom Hit by Ransomware Cyberattack

Capcom announced that hackers accessed some of the company resources, including emails and file servers, and some operations have been halted. The first report would indicate a ransomware infection with Ragnar Locker.

Details of a possible intrusion in Capcom’s systems surfaced in a ZDNet report, which indicated that the Japanese company was hit with a ransomware infection, likely of the Ragnar Locker strain. It took a while for the company to admit to the intrusion and to inform the public.

“Beginning in the early morning hours of November 2, 2020 some of the Capcom Group networks experienced issues that affected access to certain systems, including email and file servers,” said the company in the advisory.

“The company has confirmed that this was due to unauthorized access carried out by a third party, and that it has halted some operations of its internal networks as of November 2. Capcom expressed its deepest regret for any inconvenience this may cause to its various stakeholders.”

Of course, the first thing to investigate is the possibility that hackers could have gotten their hands on customer information, but that’s apparently not the case. Furthermore, the intrusion doesn’t seem to have affected the core components of the business.

“This incident has not affected connections for playing the company’s games online or access to its various website,” the company explained.

For now, the company has contacted the police and other relevant authorities, and it’s trying to restore services. There’s no ETA for further updates.

Interestingly, this is the third gaming company to get hit by hackers in the space of a month, with Ubisoft and Crytek being the other two. For now, though, it seems to be two different culprits.
